Guinea-Bissau's prime minister, Carlos Gomes Jr., has been released from house arrest after a brief detention on a day when an apparent power struggle within the country's army sparked fears of an impending coup. Political clashes and uncertainty have plagued Guinea-Bissau since the assassination of top general and President Joao Bernardo Vieira in 2009.
