7 technologies that are set to shake up manufacturing

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers has named the seven technologies likely to transform the manufacturing sector in coming years. Among the highlights: graphene, a material with applications in sensors and switches; programmable magnets that turn magnetic fields into tools; and build-to-demand mass-production management protocols. "These are innovations that can be used today, or within a few months, and have already shown some successful implementation," says Boris Fritz, a Northrop Grumman engineer who helped select the winning innovations.
