Foursquare has cut off network access to an application that allowed users to pinpoint the location of nearby women based on their Foursquare check-ins and personal data from their social profiles -- without their consent. Billed as the "perfect complement to any pick-up strategy," the Girls Around Me app drew sharp criticism from privacy advocates. "You can sort of imagine the idea sounding funny to a basement full of college-age hackers. ... But in the real world, it felt like stalking," writes Andrew Dowell.
