Candy makers and lawmakers push to end subsidies

Critics of federal sugar subsidies on sugar say the payments to farmers are outdated, cost taxpayers millions and drive up the cost of ingredients so much that many candy makers are forced to move production to other countries. "When coming back to the United States, I found out that I was paying up to 90% more for sugar in the last few years," said Joe Dutra, who bucked the trend and brought Kimmie Candy Company back to the U.S. from South Korea.
