U.K. PMI gains slightly, remains negative

Declines in production and new orders helped hold down the U.K.'s purchasing managers' index for March to 48.3, as measured by Markit/CIPS. The reading was up from 47.9 in February but still solidly on negative ground, indicating the "manufacturing sector contracted again during the opening quarter of 2013, to remain a drag on the broader economy. The onus is now on the far larger service sector to prevent the U.K. from slipping into a triple-dip recession," said Rob Dobson, senior economist with Markit.
