Bacterial strain one gene away from becoming drug-resistant, study finds

A study in Australia has found an Escherichia coli strain that is one gene away from becoming multidrug-resistant. The emergence and spread of the E. coli ST131 strain could lead to drug-resistant bloodstream and urinary tract infections, according to author Nouri Ben Zakour. The findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
