With the advent of advanced, smaller and more economical technology, handheld ultrasound is quickly becoming an invaluable tool for clinicians, according to experts who argue that bedside ultrasound as an extension of the physical exam and stethoscope auscultation will improve care and cut costs. "People like to compare ultrasound to the stethoscope, but ultrasound is actually a much more powerful tool when used well," said Dr. Christopher L. Moore of Yale University School of Medicine. However, he and other experts stress the importance of proper training. "Like the stethoscope, the contribution to diagnosis is directly related to the skill of the operator," Moore said.
