Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries, which built a cult following with its family-run stores in the Washington, D.C., region, has plans for another 1,000 East Coast stores in the coming years. Although the founding family reluctantly agreed to franchise, they maintain heavy control over each operation -- customers who request bacon must be given two strips, those who request pickles are given four slices.
