Report: Most teens understand writing basics

More than 80% of eighth- and 12th-graders are familiar with the basics of writing, but relatively few of these students are capable of writing proficiently, according to National Assessment of Educational Progress results released Thursday. Just one in three eighth-graders and one in four high-school seniors were found capable of using proper spelling, grammar and other skills to proficiently write a clear academic essay.
