Group aims to lessen social isolation of teens

Beyond Differences is a new nonprofit group in Marin, Calif., aimed at reducing the social isolation sometimes experienced by students with and without disabilities in middle school and encouraging students to take leadership on the issue. The group was formed in honor of Lili Rachel Smith, who had a rare genetic disease that caused deformities of her skull, face, feet and hands. She was a tireless disability activist before she died in 2009 at age 15.
