Group urges pre-surgery assessment for type 2 diabetes patients

Physicians considering bariatric surgery for patients with type 2 diabetes should carefully examine the patients' BMI, the duration of their disease and their expected compliance with future lifestyle changes, the Endocrine Society said in a statement. "Sustained long-term benefits will require maintenance of the metabolic changes achieved. Bariatric surgery is not a guarantee of successful weight loss and maintenance," the group said.
