A Tennessee district is in the third week of a pilot program in which every student at two elementary schools has access to a free, hot breakfast. The goal is to determine whether the program, which will run through mid-May, increases student engagement and reduces absences and visits to the school nurse. "We try to make every meal they have at school, a good meal," Nutrition Coordinator Karen Helton said. "Something they like, they will eat, healthy and hot."
