Tension won't derail tax-reform deal, Baucus aides say

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., has clashed with his party over the Senate's budget plan but is nonetheless pushing ahead with efforts to broker a tax-overhaul deal. Aides say Baucus is determined to achieve a workable compromise with Republicans, although some say it's unlikely he would commit political capital to any tax-reform push that hadn't already received significant bipartisan support. "He's clearly in full re-election mode," says one tax-reform lobbyist. "There's no earthly reason for him to go stepping on toes to put something out unless it can become law.”
