Still, Republicans fear that the tarnished ex-executive -- whose 2009 affair left him unpopular with both GOP officials and female voters -- could flub the May 7 election and hand a once-safe seat to the Democrats. A complicating factor: Sanford's opponent, Elizabeth Colbert Busch, can count on her brother, celebrity faux newsman Stephen Colbert, to provide star power and fundraising support.
