Biotech IPO, VC funding continues to gain strength

The U.S. biotech industry is off to a strong start this year after raising significantly more money through initial public offerings and private venture capital financing in the first quarter compared with the same period last year, according to BioWorld Snapshots. Twenty-six biotech firms went public and raised $1.77 billion last quarter, compared with four IPO deals totaling $247.6 million in the first quarter of 2013. Meanwhile, private biotech firms secured more than $800 million in VC funding from January to March 2014, more than double the amount raised in the same period last year.
