Study data showed 72% of elderly Americans had an advance directive in 2010, up from 47% in 2000, according to researchers at the University of Michigan and the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System. The report in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found the increase in advance directives did not have much effect on hospitalization or mortality rates, but lead author and palliative care expert Maria Silveira said people seem to be more comfortable discussing end-of-life care.
