U.N. underestimates carbon emissions, study claims

New technologies, and not just behavioral changes, may be needed to achieve meaningful reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases, according to a paper published in the journal Nature. "The sorts of policies that are being discussed around the world here in the U.K., in the U.S. -- there's a good possibility they're not up to the challenge of stabilizing emissions," said Roger Pielke, one of the researchers on the project. With the Kyoto accord due to expire in 2012, governments are considering new restrictions on industry and additional incentives for renewable energy.
