Watchful waiting OK in some HPV cases

U.S. cancer researchers say women with a normal cytologic and initial positive HPV results may be candidates for watchful waiting. The authors say infections with carcinogenic HPV types are common and the risk of cancer following a single-time HPV detection is low. Persistent infections with a carcinogenic HPV type, however, substantially increase the risk for cervical cancer.
