Frequent-flier programs remain profitable for airlines

"A frequent-flier mile is less valuable than it used to be," industry observer Tim Winship says, but analysts say the airline programs are profitable. Customers continue to participate, enjoying perks such as preferred seating and free checked bags. "These programs have been written off more times that I can count, but they continue to be quite popular," said Randy Petersen, editor of Inside Flyer magazine.
