Dentists educate, screen patients for Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Nonhealing mouth sores, pain around the teeth, vocal changes and lumps in the mouth or neck are signs of oral cancer. Smoking is the primary cause of oral cancer, but exposure to human papillomavirus is suspected to be behind a growing incidence of oral cancers. Dentists evaluate soft tissues of the mouth as part of routine screening and can screen specifically for oral cancer.
