Hemangioma is misused in 71% of vascular anomalies cases

The term hemangioma is used inappropriately in 71% of cases of vascular anomalies, a Harvard University review of 320 articles found. Inaccurate nomenclature led to the wrong treatment in 21% of the cases, compared with improper treatment in 0% of cases diagnosed using the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies classification system. The term was most frequently misused by non-dermatologists and shows the need for early referral of patients with complicated lesions, pediatric dermatologist and study author Moise L. Levy said.
