ICU bedrest may lead to muscle strength loss, study says


Each day an ICU patient spends in bed may reduce muscle strength by 3% to 11% over the following two years, researchers from Johns Hopkins University reported in Critical Care Medicine. Senior author Dr. Dale Needham said the harms of bed rest in the ICU outweigh the potential harm of providing rehabilitation for patients, even when they are very ill and on life support.
