Pit-digging timeline for Bertha fix is unclear

Work to dig an 83-foot-diameter pit in front of Bertha, the tunnel-boring machine at work on Seattle's Highway 99 tunnel, so repairs could begin was slated to be finished in September. However, that appears to have been an "optimistic" time table, according to these articles. Whenever the pit is ready, cranes will "disassemble the cutter head and other parts of the machine," said Matt Preedy of the Washington State Department of Transportation.
