Texas ethanol producer wins partial waiver of tax-deal requirement

The Hale County, Texas, commissioners agreed to waive all but 5% of taxes owed by the White Energy Plainview ethanol plant as part of a tax-incentive agreement. The drought-induced spike in corn prices forced the plant to temporarily close in January 2013, causing it to fall short of the volume obligation under the tax-abatement deal. The company asked for a one-time waiver of the requirement, but the commissioners said they couldn't grant a full waiver because other businesses might ask for the same thing.
