South Africa to build, export nuclear pebble-bed reactor

South Africa is building the world's first pebble bed modular reactor at a cost of $400 million, with fuel loading scheduled to start in 2010. Developer PBMR (Pty.) Ltd. awarded the initial contract for engineering, construction management and procurement to a joint venture of Canada's SNC-Lavalin South Africa (Pty.) Ltd., but several other international contracts are in the works as there are plans to export the technology.
