Microsoft is shutting the door on Itanium support

Windows Server 2008 R2 is the last Microsoft system that will support the Intel Itanium architecture. The move, announced through the Windows Server Division weblog, was made because of the small number of Windows licenses sold on Itanium compared with x64 licenses. Mainstream support will continue to July 2013 and extended support until July 2018.
