Surveys show slow growth, little hiring at small businesses

The small-business economy may be on the brink of recovery but will do so only slowly, surveys show. Multiple small-business surveys provide a slightly differing view of the economy, but most indicate that slumping sales are the primary problem for owners. According to NFIB's February optimism survey, tax breaks could help hiring, but real growth can't occur until customers pick up spending.
