Research looks at ESRD outcomes in children

A study in Arthritis & Rheumatism found that 49% of children with lupus nephritis-associated end-stage renal disease were still on the waiting list for a kidney transplant five years after onset of the disease, while 33% had a transplant and 22% died. Researchers found that 31% of the deaths were due to cardiopulmonary complications and 16% to infections, with black children having nearly double the mortality risk compared with whites.
