Lighting in all of Boston's Big Dig tunnels must be replaced

New energy-efficient LED lights will replace all the lights in Boston's Big Dig tunnels at a cost of about $54 million. The move is deemed necessary to deal with chronic corrosion in the current fixtures. The new lights will be in sealed plastic housing and will need no maintenance until they burn out, at which time they would need to be replaced. The project will require lane closures for up to two years.
