Urban food deserts are in the spotlight

First lady Michelle Obama's focus on nutrition and obesity has prompted grocery chains to reconsider plans to leave urban food deserts and encouraged them to open hundreds of new stores. Actor Wendell Pierce, who plans to open a Sterling Farms grocery in a New Orleans food desert, said bringing fresh food into such areas helps create economic growth.
