Iowa senator wants GAO to review tax exemptions for hospitals

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, asked the Government Accountability Office for a nationwide review of how nonprofit hospitals are taking steps to justify tax exemptions. Hospital supporters cited charity care, care for Medicaid patients and aid programs, but welcomed the opportunity to standardize benefit reports. "Hospitals have good stories to share about the benefits they provide to the community," an American Hospital Association spokeswoman said.
