March unemployment level in U.S. highest since 1983

Unemployment in the U.S. reached its highest level in March since November 1983, increasing to 8.5% from 8.1% the month before, according to the Labor Department. Job losses in manufacturing and construction, both chemical end markets, were high, with unemployment in construction increasing to 21.1% in March from 12% a year ago, and manufacturing increasing to 12.2% from 5% a year ago.
