RN's Beads of Courage program lets sick kids show strength

Begun by RN Jean Baruch, the Beads of Courage program gives sick children string and multicolored beads representing different procedures or treatment milestones. She says children collect, on average, more than 500 beads each. The hospital-based program is one way to help pediatric patients deal with the psychological effects of serious illness and also helps nurses connect with the patients, Baruch says.
