Virginia teen faces expulsion for taking prescription medication

Under a zero-tolerance school drug policy, a Virginia honor student was suspended for two weeks and faces expulsion for swallowing a birth-control pill -- a legally prescribed medication of which her mother was aware -- in the school cafeteria. Her punishment was the same as if she had brought a gun to school and harsher than if she had been caught high on LSD or heroin, according to the school's handbook. A district official said the policy is necessary to prevent abuse of prescription drugs.
