Florida blood banks say the business is costly

Community Blood Centers of South Florida and Florida's Blood Centers, although rivals in the blood-collection business, both agree that running a blood bank involves very high operational costs -- from collecting the blood to screening it and then distributing it. Financial data obtained by the Orlando Sentinel show that the primary expenses and income streams for operating a blood bank are similar for both groups. "Ensuring the safety of blood is the main driver behind the costs," an FBC spokeswoman said.
