March retail sales surprise, delight industry

Warm weather, an early Easter holiday and improved employment statistics caused March retail sales to jump three times as much as had been expected. Retail revenues might have increased as much as 10% compared with the same period last year, says Michael Niemira, chief economist at the International Council of Shopping Centers. The group's earlier maximum forecast for March was 3.5%.
