Using Web-crawling software, Pete Warden -- aka the "Facebook Whisperer" -- gathered the public data of 210 million Facebook users, then offered to share his database with employment and health researchers. Now Facebook has shut down the exercise, in a move Warden says shows that the company is still struggling with the implications of its vast data trove. "I don't think they realized that you could take so much fragmented data and answer such big questions," he says. "We're all treading new territory and figuring out the rules."
