U.K. to consider heavy drinkers for liver transplants

The U.K.'s National Health Service Blood and Transplant service will conduct a pilot study to offer organ donation to 20 patients who would otherwise be excluded from consideration due to poor prognoses for severe alcohol-associated hepatitis. Current U.K. NHS guidelines say potential recipients with liver-related disease must abstain from alcohol ahead of the transplant and for the rest of their lives.
