NPD Group says 16 percent of consumers downloading music in 2008 used Amazon MP3, compared with 87 percent who used iTunes, according to a survey that allowed users to list more than one vendor. NPD says Amazon should take heart, however, because that's a far bigger market share than any other iTunes competitor has managed to eke out. "I suspect a lot of consumers, some of them a little older, are still buying CDs," NPD analyst Russ Crupnick said. "That's going to help Amazon because they aren't battling over every crumb with iTunes. They'll share some customers and have some of their own, and that will help the company with growth."
