Daily Economic Indicator: Consumer spending increases

After months of keeping a tight grip on spending to ride out the recession, consumers are returning to the stores and spending more. A possible indicator of growing optimism, they aren't just buying the absolute necessities, analysts said. America's consumers are buying jewelry, cars and clothes. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com, said consumers were "almost a bit giddy."
