SEC might require sellers of asset-backed securities to retain risk

The Securities and Exchange Commission unanimously approved a proposal that would require financial firms to hold a portion of an asset-backed security or face regulatory hurdles when they try to offload the bond. The ABS sellers would also be prohibited from hedging on the retained portion. "Changes are both necessary and critical components of restoring investor confidence," SEC Chairwoman Mary Schapiro said.
