Physician groups urge extension of Medicare payment demo

Ten physician groups are in talks with the CMS to extend for two years the Physician Group Practice Demonstration, an experimental pay-for-performance program tied to Medicare. The extension would allow Medicare to tailor and test incentives in accordance with rules governing accountable care organizations and allow providers to prepare for ACOs, said David Spahlinger, executive director of the University of Michigan Medical Group Practice.
