Two dozen applicants seeking federal high-speed rail dollars

Twenty-four states, the District of Columbia and Amtrak are competing for $2.4 billion in federal high-speed rail dollars rejected by Florida. Amtrak wants more than $1 billion for passenger-rail projects in the Northeast. Competition is stiff, as some 90 projects totaling $10 billion are bidding for a piece of the grant.
