Heart disease in dogs can cause symptoms of lethargy, coughing, breathing problems and weight loss, but there are some steps owners and veterinarians can take to offset its complications, writes veterinarian Lawrence Gerson. Regular veterinary exams, routine dental care, heart auscultation, EKG and even heart ultrasound combined with medications can improve the quality and length of a dog's life despite heart disease.
