Software issues, user cost barriers to mobile bar code adoption

Widespread adoption of bar code technology for mobile purchases and other applications has been slow in the U.S., compared with Asia and Europe, because cell phones here do not have the software to support them, according to this article. A test of phones with mobile bar codes that can be used to access bus schedules and other content at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland reportedly hasn't generated much interest, partly because of the cell phone fees associated with the service, this article says.
