Largest public building project to begin in the fall

Construction will start in September on a new headquarters for the U.S. Coast Guard, the first building in a $3.4 billion project that will consolidate the Department of Homeland Security on one campus in Washington, D.C. However, some preservationists have raised concerns about the project because the campus will be located on the site of the shuttered St. Elizabeths Hospital, a historic, 157-year-old mental institution. The project will receive $650 million from the stimulus package, and will be the biggest public building project since the Pentagon was built.
