Education Department moves to protect privacy of student data

The Education Department is taking steps to ensure that schools protect the privacy of students while increasing the use of student data to drive innovation and improvement. Education Secretary Arne Duncan is seeking a revision of the 1974 Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, and the department is suggesting four key initiatives -- including creating the post of Chief Privacy Officer -- to support schools in their efforts.
