CORHIO requests the integration of behavioral health data with HIE

The Colorado Regional Health Information Exchange has worked for two years to incorporate behavioral health data into a more comprehensive HIE, and it recently released a report on the effort. The report noted that while HIPAA rules have been changed to allow transfer of medical records for patients in behavioral health programs without their consent, patient consent is needed before releasing medical records for federally-backed drug or alcohol treatment initiatives. Enabling selective consent is the "highest priority," the report says.
