USDA sends sugar-for-ethanol purchase plan to White House

The Department of Agriculture has submitted to the White House budget office a proposal to address the glut in sugar supplies by buying excess inventory and selling it to ethanol producers. "We will make a decision following a review of all circumstances," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said. Under the Flexible Feedstocks Program, the USDA would have to buy 484,000 metric tons of sugar to reduce stockpiles to a manageable level, said Frank Jenkins, president of broker Jenkins Sugar Group.
