Fee for personal leave irks North Carolina teachers

A $50 fee long charged to North Carolina teachers when they take a personal day off for things such as a wedding or a spouse's birthday, has long annoyed many professionals, but now some are lobbying the legislature to change the rule. The $50 to offset the cost of hiring a substitute is not charged when a teacher is ill, but in 2006 teachers paid about $3.8 million for personal leave days.
